Therapy approaches in the Netherlands
Psychological treatment in the Netherlands
There is no single therapy that works for everyone.
You may have heard of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR, or acceptance-based therapy. However, the approach that works best depends on your symptoms, your background, your personality, and your goals.
At Psyned, we offer a range of evidence-based therapy approaches across the Netherlands. The type of treatment is always tailored to your situation.
Sessions are available in English. In some cases, therapy may also be available in another language, depending on the psychologist.
You don’t need to decide in advance which type of therapy you need. During the intake, your psychologist takes the time to understand your situation and, together with you, determines which approach fits best.
In short
- We offer a range of evidence-based therapy approaches
- The right treatment depends on your symptoms and personal situation
- Your psychologist helps you choose the approach that fits you best
How therapy is tailored to your situation
Different psychological difficulties call for different approaches.
Trauma-related symptoms often respond well to EMDR. Anxiety is commonly treated with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Burnout often requires a phased approach, focusing first on recovery and stabilisation. Relationship difficulties can benefit from structured couples therapy.
At the same time, therapy is never one-size-fits-all. Two people with similar concerns may benefit from different approaches. Your psychologist looks not only at your symptoms, but also at how you cope, as well as your strengths and preferences.
When helpful, different approaches can be combined or adjusted along the way. Therapy is a collaborative and flexible process.

How long does treatment take?
The length of therapy depends on your symptoms, your situation, and your goals.
Some people seek support for a specific issue or recent life event and may benefit from just a few sessions. Others, especially when difficulties have been present for longer or are more complex, may need a longer process.
During the intake, your psychologist will talk with you about what to expect in terms of duration and frequency. Progress is reviewed regularly, and treatment can be adjusted along the way.
The goal is not to continue therapy longer than necessary, but to support meaningful and lasting improvement.
Not sure which therapy you need?
Many people contact us without knowing whether their symptoms relate to anxiety, burnout, trauma, depression, or relationship difficulties. You don’t need to figure this out on your own.
During the intake session, your psychologist will:
- Help you understand your symptoms
- Talk through possible treatment approaches
- Recommend the approach that fits you best
If needed, the treatment plan can be adjusted over time.
